Gym Evangelism
So a lot of times when we hear the word evangelism it’s come to mean a certain population in our country and their beliefs and less about the actual act of spreading the good news. In II Timothy 4:5 Paul is writing to Timothy and encourages him to do the work of an evangelist or quite literally a person who shares the good news.
Today I was in the gym, cause that’s romantic right?! Anyway I had this book on Youth Ministry with me minding my own business and this lady kept looking at me, then the book and then back at me. When I was done on that machine she asked me:
Are you a youth minister? (lady)
No, my wife and I are volunteers but it sure seems like a full time job. (me)
(Frustratedly) Yeah young people these days are so hard to understand, like my daughter. Everytime she turns on the TV it’s all about Hannah Montana and how rich she is! And I just keep tellin’ her that you can’t bring your money to heaven with you.
Well in a small group we were discussing the first commandment and about how as American Christians we can clearly say that we don’t have other gods that we bow down to in our homes, but then again we do: TV, internet…
And money!
or even the gym. The point is that we have been working with youth a while and have seen pretty amazing things, but it’s nothing we’ve done. It’s Him and with your daughter you just have to have faith that He is in control.
That’s so true, thank you.
And then she left, more at peace than when we started. The point is that God gives you opportunities to share his good news and his love at times when you don’t even think about it! It doesn’t mean that you have to be ready to defend the faith at the drop of a hat, but telling others about the grace you have received in an unexpected situation is a great gift. Keep your eyes and ears open; when will He give you an opportunity?
