John 1: What is Truth?
This past Sunday FLY began the Autumn Bible study on the Gospel of John entitled “I tell you the Truth”, published by Concordia Publishing House.
What appears below is a study guide that will be published here every month, to help those who couldn’t make it on Sunday nights at 7:00 pm.
Read John chapter 1.
What references to the truth do you find?
Is there such a thing as truth?
What is the difference between TRUTH and VIEWPOINT?
What do you think of this definition?:
TRUTH: The actual facts or objective reality.
TRUTH IS NOT: a personal opinion or subjective viewpoint.
Before knowing if something is the truth, it’s important to know if something is R.E.A.L.:
Repetition: We know through trial and error (e.g. math lessons are done over and over with homework)
Experience: We know through what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel. (e.g. as a kid you only touched the hot stove once.)
Authority: We know through what we learn from those who have known before us. (e.g. Grandparent’s wisdom)
Logic: We know through what we discern to be true even if we haven’t experienced it. (e.g. You should bring an umbrella because you saw it was raining outside, even though you aren’t wet.)
What are some examples when R.E.A.L. can be used by the devil to mislead us?
